Featured Author: Stevan Harnad
Stevan Harnad (born in Budapest, Hungary) obtained his B.A. (1967) and M. A. (1969) in psychology at McGill University, Canada. Then he went to Princeton University, where he obtained degrees in psychology (M.A 1971; PhD 1991). He is currently Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Science at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Southampton, UK. He is also an external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Harnad was the founder and editor (1978-2003) of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He has served as an editor or member of the editorial board for numerous journals, among them Psychology, PSYCHE, Consciousness and Cognition, Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life. In 1998 he founded and began moderating the American Scientist Open Access Forum.
Dr. Harnad's research focuses on categorization, communication, cognition, and consciousness. He has contributed substantially to the Symbol Grounding Problem, a major problem in cognitive science and artificial intelligence research. He is also an advocate for Open Access to Research.
