    Larry R. Squire (b. May 4, 1941 in Cherokee, Iowa) received his B.A. degree from Oberlin College in 1963 and a PhD in Psychology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. After post-doctoral training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Squire currently holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry (since 1981), Neurosciences (since 1993), and Psychology (since 1996) at the University of California, San Diego, and is a Research Career Scientist (since 1980) at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Diego.

    Among his many distinctions, Dr. Squire has served as President of the Society for Neuroscience (1993-1994) and as Chair of the Neuroscience section for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2001). He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and The Institute of Medicine. He is also a William James Fellow of the American Psychological Society and is a recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, the Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievements in Health, the McGovern Award (AAAS), the Metropolitan Life Award for Medical Research, the Karl Lashley Prize (American Philosophical Society), and the Howard Crosby Warren Medal (Society of Experimental Psychologists).

    Dr. Squire investigates the organization and neurological foundations of memory. His work involves the study of neurological patients and rodents and combines the traditions of neuroscience, neuropsychology, and cognitive science. His publications include more than 400 research articles and two books: Memory and Brain (Oxford Press, 1987) and Memory: From Mind to Molecules with Eric Kandel (W.H. Freeman, 1999). Dr. Squire is also Senior Editor of the textbook, Fundamental Neuroscience (3rd Edition) (Elsevier, 2008). He is Editor-in-Chief of The Encyclopedia of Neuroscience (Elsevier, 2008) and is currently on the editorial boards of 11 scientific journals. More information
