Paul L. Nunez is Emeritus Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans and runs a small EEG (electroencephalography) consulting firm, Cognitive Dissonance, LLC. Nunez works occasionally for private industry and regularly with the Cognitive Science Department of the University of California at Irvine. He is author of about 100 scientific publications, mostly on EEG and dynamic behavior in brains and analog physical systems, including four books, his latest Brain, Mind, and the Structure of Reality (in press, 2009, Oxford University Press). Professor Nunez’s hobbies include tennis and macroeconomics; for example, he recently developed a mathematical model of inflation in a fictitious society called Oz. Professor Nunez was born in Miami Beach, Florida in 1940, grew up in Tampa, and obtained BS and MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering physics (research in theoretical plasma physics, 1969) and NIH-sponsored postdoctoral training in the neurosciences, both from the University of California at San Diego where he carried out his early EEG work in the Medical School (1971-1980). In breaks between his several academic experiences, Nunez held engineering and scientific positions in three private companies, working on spacecraft guidance, plasma physics, and hot controlled fusion.
