Dr. Nicolas Alamanos, Emeritus Research Director at the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA).

    A short Curriculum Vitae

    Figure 1: Nicolas Alamanos

Nicolas Alamanos is Emeritus Research Director at the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA)

    Early days

He was born in Athens (Greece) and graduated from the University of Athens in Physics.

In 1983, he has obtained a “Doctorat d’état” from the University Paris-XI, today “Université Paris-Saclay”.

His early research interests encompasses domains as different as : compound nucleus reactions, statistical fluctuations, emission of high energy gamma rays, excitation of giant resonances in direct reactions, or the study of the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in compound nucleus reactions.

His research interests led him to participate in various experimental programs in different laboratories, like the Post-accelerated Tandem, the SATURN and the ALS accelerators at Saclay, the GANIL National facility at Caen, in France, the Stony Brook LINAC, the Oak Ridge and MSU facilities in the USA or the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (Russia).

During his scientific career, he has occupied different managerial positions and served on many scientific and program advisory committees.

    Managerial positions

Most notably he has been Director of the Saclay Nuclear Physics Department, Deputy Director of the Institute of Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU), Research Director at CEA , President of the GANIL Scientific Council.

    Few selected Committees

He has been a member or evaluator of many national and international committees – In particular, he has been the scientific secretary of the Spiral Project International Scientific Committee, led by professor Ben Mottelson. This committee played an important role in shaping the Spiral facility of GANIL and the associated scientific equipments. Later on, he led a working group concerning the long-range plan of the GANIL facility. The result of this work contributed to establishing the technical and scientific case for the SPIRAL2 project.

He has been part also of many other committees like the: ANR (France), ARISTEIA (GRECE), FRS-FNRS (Belgium), STFC (England) of GANIL’s Directorate committee, of GANIL/SPIRAL2 scientific council, of GANIL’s program advisory committee, Scientific counselor of the European program “CEA-Euro talents” in the domain of high energy physics and physics of the universe, Secretary of the Joint (DSM-IN2P3) committee (Comité de Concertation Thématique pour la Physique Nucléaire de Haute Energie), ..... Chairperson of the governing board of the European project CHANDA….

    In the last years 2016-2021

Focussing on the last five years (2016-2021), he has been, or he is, a member of the JINR International Strategic Working Group - DUBNA Russia, of the Institutos Nacionais de Cienza e Technologia, (INCT) – Brazil, of the International Advisory Committee of the Isotope Science Project (RISP) - Korea, of the Scientific Council of the Grand accélérateur National des Ions Lourds (GANIL) – France, Chairperson of the Flanders Research Foundation committee (FWO) – Flanders – Belgium.....

    Editorial Activities

In addition to his various scientific and administrative duties, he has always been very active editorially: He has been for many years a member of the editorial board of the European Physical Journal A (EPJA), and from 2013 to 2020 Editor in Chief of EPJA and Managing Editor of Reviews for the experimental physics section, today he is a EPJA Managing Editor for Reviews and Letters to the Editor

    Selected Publications

In parallel to his different managerial duties, he has continued to publish review papers in his domain of interest.

    Few select examples are:

Fusion and direct reactions of halo nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier , N. Keeley et al. in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics 59 (2007) 579-630.

Elastic scattering and reactions of light exotic beams , N. Keeley et al. in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics 63 (2009) 396-447.

Taking examples of recent publications, from 2020 to 2021, he has published:

Alamanos N., An introduction to the school Rewriting Nuclear Physics Textbooks: one-step forward and future perspectives , Eur. Phys. J. Plus (2020) 135:417.

    Alamanos N., Jacques Raynal - memories of a physicist , Eur. Phys. J. A, 56 (2020) 212.

He is the author of more than~180 publications with an H factor of ~38.

He is also the Editor of the Scholarpedia Encyclopedia of Nuclear Physics.

In 2022 he has obtained the commemorative medal of the Research Foundation of Flanders FWO

Since 2009 he is member of the GSI-GENCO community.
