Featured Author: Nestor A. Schmajuk
Nestor A. Schmajuk received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires and became an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering in Argentina. In 1986, he obtained a PhD in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts and became a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Adaptive Systems at Boston University. From 1988 until 1993, Dr. Schmajuk was an Assistant Professor of psychology at Northwestern University. In 1992 he obtained a fellowship from the Royal Society to develop models of latent inhibition and the hippocampus. In 1993 he moved to Duke University where he is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience.
Dr. Schmajuk has developed neural network models of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, animal communication, creativity, spatial learning, cognitive mapping, and prepulse inhibition. Using these neural networks he has described the effects of hippocampal, cortical, and cerebellar lesions; the results of the administration of dopaminergic and cholinergic drugs; as well as the consequences of schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder, in different sensory, learning and cognitive paradigms. His most recent work focuses on the attentional, associative, and configural mechanisms in extinction and causal learning. Dr Schmajuk has authored many research articles and book chapters (complete list). He has also authored 2 books, edited 1 book, and is currently preparing a book entitled Mechanism in Classical Conditioning: A Computational Approach. (New York, NY: Cambridge University Press) and editing another one addressing computational models of conditioning. He is on the Editorial Board of Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
