James L. McGaugh (b. December 17, 1931) is a neuroscientist investigating neural processes mediating learning and memory. McGaugh received his B.A. from San Jose State University in 1953 in Psychology and his Ph.D. from then University of California, Berkeley in 1959. He is currently Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine.
His distinguished awards include : Member, National Academy of Sciences; Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association; Foreign Member, Brazilian and Mexican Academy of Sciences; William James Fellow, Association for Psychological Science; Karl Lashley Prize in Neuroscience, American Philosophical Society; Fellow and Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Experimental Psychologists; The biological science building McGaugh Hall on the UC Irvine Campus is named in his honor.
His research interests include studying the effects of drugs and stress hormones on memory storage and interaction of the amygdale with other brain regions in regulation memory storage.
McGaugh can be found playing in a jazz ensemble once a month at the UC Irvine campus pub.
