Peter E. Latham (b. Feb 5, 1954 in San Francisco, CA) received his B.A. degree in Physics from UC San Diego in 1977 and an M.A. and PhD in Physics (1985) from UC Berkeley. After post-doctoral training he was appointed Research Associate in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Maryland. He was subsequently promoted to Assistant and then Associate Research Scientist. After appointments as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health (Bethesda, MD) and to the position of Associate Research Scientist at UCLA, he moved to University College London. At UCL he joined the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit as a Reader, and in 2009 was promoted to Professor, his current position.

Until 1995, Dr. Latham's research interests were in the field of Physics. During that period, he studied and developed lasers and gyroklystrons. After his appointment as Research Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health, he shifted his interests towards Neuroscience. He now investigates coding and computation in large populations of neurons, using techniques borrowed from dynamical systems, statistical physics, and machine learning. He has published over 70 articles in Physics and Neuroscience. Dr. Latham is on the editorial board of the Journal of Computational Neuroscience and PLoS Computational Biology.
