Dr. Kazuyuki Aihara (b. June 23rd, 1954 in Fukuoka, Japan) received the B.E. degree of electrical engineering in 1977 and the Ph.D. degree of electronic engineering 1982 from the University of Tokyo, Japan. Currently, Dr.Aihara is Professor of Institute of Industrial Science, and Graduate School of Information Science and Technology as well as Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. He is also Director of Collaborative Research Center for Innovative Mathematical Modelling, the University of Tokyo, and Research Director of FIRST Aihara Innovative Mathematical Modelling Project, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Dr.Aihara is author and editor of many books, "Neural Computers", "Neuro, Fuzzy and Chaos - Introduction to the New Generation of Analog Computing", "Chaos in Neural Systems" are some of his books. His recent publications include a theme issue(Ed. by K.Aihara) on theory of hybrid dynamical systems and its applications to biological and medical systems, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, Vol.368, No.1930(2010), and L. Chen, R. Wang, C. Li, and K. Aihara, "Modeling Biomolecular Networks in Cells: Structures and Dynamics", Springer(2010).

Dr.Aihara has been studying chaos in neurons and neural systems since the late 1970's. He learned complexity of real neurons and beauty of neural network theory from the late Prof. Gen Matsumoto and Prof. Shun-ichi Amari, respectively. His current research interests include mathematical modeling of complex systems, parallel distributed processing with spatio-temporal chaos and its analog IC implementation, and time series analysis of complex data.

Dr.Aihara can be reached at Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, 4-6-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-8505, Japan.
