Christopher M. Sinton was born in Beckenham and grew up in Tunbridge Wells, England. After completing undergraduate studies at Cambridge University and subsequently at the University of London, he moved to the University of Lyon where in 1981 he received his PhD in neurophysiology. Dr. Sinton was Senior Scientist and Associate Director at Neurogen Corporation (Branford, Connecticut) until he joined the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1994, where he is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine.
While a Research Fellow at Princeton University, Dr. Sinton received the IBRO award for neurophysiology research. Reviewer for many journals, he has also contributed to a large number of papers, reviews, proceedings and book chapters. He is coeditor of the book Neurochemistry of Sleep and Wakefulness.
His main research focuses on the Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses. By developing a mouse model of this neurodegenerative process and studying it through delayed behavioral, EEG, PET and MRI approaches, his lab investigates possible treatments for this illness. He is also working on the physiology and pharmacology of sleep and has aided the development of techniques for neurosurgical treatement of Parkinson’s disease.
