Scholarpedia:Last author

It is proposed that authorship position in Scholarpedia articles takes its cue from a convention used in the biomedical sciences whereby the first author is the individual chiefly responsible for the article's creation, and the last author has a more supervisory role.

Many of Scholarpedia's articles are single-author publication written by the world's leading expert on the topic. However, restricting Scholarpedia to such a format will prevent many authors from participating (e.g. if the author is a practicing physician, administrator, or engineer, who would not author a Scholarpedia article if asked to do so entirely him/herself). This latter case, the "last author" convention is a sensible one, as it allows collaborative writing that acknowledges areas of author responsibility in a way familiar to those who see the article's citation outside of Scholarpedia.
