John Guckenheimer (b. 1945, Baton Rouge, LA) received his B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1966 and Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. He has been a member of the Mathematics and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Departments of Cornell University since 1985. He was a faculty member at the University of California, Santa Cruz from 1973-85.
Dr. Guckenheimer is a AAAS Fellow, a former Guggenheim fellow and former president of Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He also served as founding chair of SIAM activity group in Life Sciences and as chair of SIAM activity group on Dynamical Systems. Dr. Guckenheimer was elected to be the author of the Scholarpedia article Bifurcation.
Dr. Guckenheimer has published more than 100 articles and books. He is the author (with P. Holmes) of "Nonlinear Oscillations, Dynamical Systems, and Bifurcation of Vector Fields" (Springer-Verlag, 1983) and (with S. Ellner) of "Dynamic Models in Biology". His current interests include multiscale phenomena in models in biology and computational methods for dynamical systems.
